Guiding You Through Every Step Toward Becoming an American Citizen

New Orleans Immigration Lawyers

Family Bike Trip

At The Rousell Law Firm, we are proud to help immigrants achieve one of the most meaningful milestones of their lives — becoming a United States citizen.

Citizenship opens the door to voting rights, expanded employment opportunities, and the ability to bring your family members to the U.S. permanently.

Our experienced New Orleans immigration attorneys guide clients through the naturalization process with clarity, precision, and care — from eligibility review to the final oath ceremony.

Understanding Naturalization

Naturalization is the legal process through which a lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder) becomes a U.S. citizen.
To qualify, you must meet certain residency, physical presence, and moral character requirements, and demonstrate knowledge of English and U.S. civics.

If you obtained your Green Card through marriage, employment, or family sponsorship, you may already be on the path to citizenship — and we can help you take the final step.

Basic Eligibility for Naturalization

You may be eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship if you meet the following requirements:

  • Age: You are at least 18 years old.

  • Residency: You have been a lawful permanent resident for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen).

  • Physical Presence: You have lived in the U.S. for at least 30 months out of the past 5 years (or 18 months out of the past 3 years if applying through marriage).

  • Continuous Residence: You have not taken long trips (over 6 months) outside the U.S. without valid reasons or documentation.

  • Good Moral Character: You have not committed serious crimes or immigration violations.

  • English and Civics Test: You can demonstrate basic English proficiency and knowledge of U.S. government and history.

Certain applicants — such as those with disabilities, military service, or older age — may qualify for exemptions or accommodations.

1. Eligibility Review - We start with a comprehensive evaluation to confirm that you meet all legal and timing requirements before filing.

2. Preparing Form N-400We help you complete and submit your Form N-400 (Application for Naturalization) with accurate supporting documentation, such as your Green Card, tax records, and marriage certificates (if applicable).

3. Biometrics Appointment - You’ll attend a fingerprinting appointment where USCIS conducts a background check.

4. Interview & Tests - You’ll be interviewed by a USCIS officer and take the English and civics test — unless you qualify for an exemption.
Our attorneys prepare you with practice questions and mock interviews.

5. Decision - USCIS will issue a written decision — approval, continuation (request for more information), or denial.

6. Oath of Allegiance - Once approved, you’ll attend a naturalization ceremony and officially become a United States citizen.

Benefits of U.S. Citizenship

  • The right to vote in federal, state, and local elections

  • Eligibility for federal jobs and benefits

  • Ability to sponsor more family members for immigration

  • Protection from deportation

  • U.S. passport and international travel freedom

  • Eligibility for elected office (in most positions)

  • Peace of mind knowing your status is permanent

Citizenship Through Parents or Birth

Some individuals may already be U.S. citizens through:

  • Birth in the United States (including certain U.S. territories)

  • Parents who are U.S. citizens, even if born abroad

  • Adoption by a U.S. citizen under certain conditions

If you’re unsure of your citizenship status, our attorneys can review your history and documentation to confirm whether you already qualify for a Certificate of Citizenship.
